  • The MICHELIN Guide announces its arrival in Mexico, for an upcoming 2024 selection.

  • The famous anonymous inspectors are already in the field.

Mexico City, October 19, 2023 - The MICHELIN Guide made a historic revelation today, with the announcement of its arrival in Mexico, and an upcoming selection of restaurants for 2024 led by independent and anonymous inspectors.

"MICHELIN Guide inspectors have been exploring this beautiful country with its ancient, vibrant and cosmopolitan capital; the country's stunning coastal areas, the enchanting beauty of Oaxaca and the rugged splendor of the Baja California peninsula." said Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the MICHELIN Guides. "My team of inspectors has enthusiastically embraced all the flavors this unique destination has to offer. From local cuisine deeply rooted in tradition and celebrating indigenous ingredients and an abundance of high quality produce, to dining rooms where globally inspired creations are on the menu; Mexico has a wealth of fascinating and impressive dining options and passionate culinary talent..."

There is no doubt about Mexico's potential as a world-class gastronomic destination, with a strong base of local talent and international food lovers looking to learn all about Mexican cuisine and its regional variations, driven by revered local products such as chiles, herbs, masa, coffee, chocolate and agave liqueurs, as well as seafood, fruits and vegetables.

The MICHELIN Guide constantly observes the evolution of culinary destinations around the world. MICHELIN collaborates with destination partners and tourism boards to promote the travel industry in their respective locations. However, the MICHELIN Guide's selection process remains completely independent, as selections are made entirely by its teams of anonymous inspectors. The MICHELIN Guide collaborates with CANIRAC on marketing and promotional activities only.

"It is a source of pride that Mexico's culinary excellence not only captivates the world, but is also recognized internationally through the prestigious MICHELIN Guide. This important achievement is the result of Michelin and CANIRAC's commitment to elevate the country's restaurant scene in Mexico and internationally. Mexico's culinary heritage is particularly rich in history and diversity and demonstrates the vitality and complexity of Mexican culture." said Daniela Mijares, Executive President of CANIRAC ( (Mexico's foremost organization of restaurants). "We would like to express our deepest gratitude to FIPROTUR in Los Cabos, the Government of Oaxaca and the Ministries of Tourism of Baja California and Nuevo Leon, for their support and commitment to promote the gastronomic wealth and national tourism development, through this recognized Guide. "

The next selection of restaurants in Mexico will follow MICHELIN's historic methodology, based on five universal criteria to ensure consistency between each selection:

- Quality of ingredients

- Mastery of culinary techniques

- Harmony of flavors

- Personality of the chef as expressed through the cuisine

- Consistency, both throughout the menu and over time.

The MICHELIN Guide remains a reliable companion for any traveler seeking an excellent restaurant experience. The Guide was first published in France in the early 20th century to promote tire sales by offering practical advice to French motorists. Expert and passionate MICHELIN Inspectors continue to use the same selection criteria they have used since the beginning and continue to apply them in all destinations around the world.

This new selection, to be unveiled in a few months, will showcase the best of Mexico's gastronomic scene and shine a light on the city's talented chefs, embracing their passion, creativity and respect for local culinary traditions. Restaurants can achieve selection in the MICHELIN Guide, but also receive MICHELIN stars (from one to three) based on the excellence of their cuisine, a Bib Gourmand (if they demonstrate an excellent value for money experience), or a MICHELIN Green Star (a complementary distinction to highlight inspiring and sustainable commitments).

The restaurants will be joined by the hotel selection of The MICHELIN Guide, which presents the most unique and exciting places to stay in Mexico and around the world. The selection includes more than 6,000 hotels in over 130 countries, with options for a wide range of budgets. Each hotel has been chosen by the MICHELIN Guide experts for its extraordinary style, service and personality, and each can be booked directly through the MICHELIN Guide website and app.

According to the results of the National Survey of Public and Urban Security (ENSU) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), the perception of insecurity in Mexico City decreased by 21.2% in the first quarter of this year, and is 3 points below the national percentage. This decrease in the perception of insecurity is related to the security strategy implemented by the capital's government, which is composed of 5 axes: Attention to the causes, More and Better Police, Intelligence and Investigation, Coordination and improvements in the implementation of the Legal Framework.

Summing up, through this efficient local multidisciplinary strategy, better training and technology have been implemented for public security agents and 1,855 new units have been integrated in the main tourist areas; additionally, 11,100 new security cameras have been installed throughout Mexico City to provide security and assistance in real time to pedestrians in the streets.

On the other hand, social programs have been implemented to promote business development, culture and sports; this has also allowed people who normally found their way out of crime to find other paths, which consequently is also contributing to lower crime rates in several areas.
